What's the big deal about kibble :
Kibble, or dry dog food, is made through a process called extrusion. Raw ingredients, including meat, bone, grains, and vegetables, are ground and mixed into a dough or paste. This mixture is then cooked under high pressure and heat in a machine called an extruder, shaping it into pellets. These pellets are then dried, cooled, and coated with flavors and preservatives to enhance palatability and shelf life. This is the process.. No matter the ingredients or manufacturer. If your food looks like brown pressed pellets, it went through this process. Would you want to eat that every day of your life..... twice a day ? We can do better !! Basically Cheerio's with meat flavoring.
Allergies are plaguing our pets !
If you’ve ever watched your dog scratch, lick, or chew themselves raw, you know how heartbreaking it is. You just want them to feel better—but sometimes it’s hard to know what’s really going on. Could it be fleas? Dry skin? Or maybe… allergies?
The truth is, allergies are one of the most common reasons dogs end up at the vet. And just like people, dogs can be allergic to all sorts of things—from pollen to certain foods to even the shampoo you bathe them with.
Allergies happen when your dog’s immune system overreacts to something harmless—like grass, chicken, or dust mites. Instead of ignoring it, their body goes into defense mode, releasing histamines that cause itching, redness, and irritation.
There are a few main types of allergies dogs tend to have:
- Environmental allergies (atopy): Things like pollen, mold, dust, and grasses.
 - Flea allergy dermatitis: A reaction to flea saliva (even one bite can set it off!).
 - Food allergies: Usually caused by proteins like beef, chicken, or dairy. Also some grains can cause inflammation which is not really an allergy but inflammation. In other words it will not show up on an allergy test but this particular pup is sensitive.
 - Contact allergies: Sensitivity to something that touches the skin—like shampoo or detergent Allergies don’t always show up the same way in every dog, but some of the most common signs include:

- Lots of scratching, licking, or chewing—especially paws, belly, or base of the tail
 - Red, flaky, or irritated skin
 - Ear infections or constant head shaking
 - Watery eyes or sneezing
 - Hair loss or hot spots
 - Tummy troubles like gas, vomiting, or diarrhea (with food allergies

Diagnosing allergies can be tricky because the symptoms overlap with other issues like yeast infections or mites. Your vet may recommend:
- Exam or testing to rule out infections or parasites.
 - Elimination diet: Feeding a simple diet with one protein and one carb for several weeks to see if symptoms improve.
 - Allergy testing: Blood tests or skin tests to pinpoint environmental triggers.

Locating the culprit may take a little leg work, But they are worth it. A Nutritionist can help. Simply Boosting the dogs immune system can take care of it. If you do plan on cooking PLEASE make sure it is a balanced diet. Lets not replace one issue with another.

                    REAL FOOD
If the food is able to sit on a shelf at room temperature, or in a hot car for hours or days, it does not sound the least but appetizing . We go to extra care to feed our family the best we can. Why not your best friend ?

                    BIOLOGICALLY APPROPRIATE
Canines are facultative carnivores. Meat is their primary source of protein. Our dogs closest relative is the wild Dingo in Australia. Their droppings have been studied. The Wolves at Yellowstone National Park just concluded a years long study on wolf poop. Both species eat more than just protein. They need more variations of food for proper growth, health and coat maintenance than obligate carnivores. Obligate carnivores like cats need only animal meat. Flesh ,bone and organ. No fruits, vegetables grains or seeds. Dogs need different vitamins and minerals. A dog should feed on a diet of 70% protein 10% bone or bone minerals,10% secreting organ meat and the last 10% should be COMBINED cruciferous veg, HEALTHY grain and dark skinned fruits. This is their biological nutrition. The next time you look at your kibble bag. Notice the crude protein percentage is way less than 70%.
Education: The More You Know
I believe education is key to anything. The more you know, the more you can make the best decision you can. In my book Chicken and Rice Isn't Good Enough, I go into the different diet styles (B.AR.F. PMR ), freeze dried, dehydrated, commercial fresh. Home made and commercial raw as well. Just because you can't pronounce it doesn't ALWAYS mean its bad. Canines have certain macro and micro nutrients dogs need. Dogs and humans have been living together for 36 thousand years. Domestic dogs ate the parts of the food that the humans did not want. Over the centuries different dog breeds had different tasks but they all needed the same nutrients.
                    Meat Meals
Whole animals ARE NOT raised for animal feed. At least I have not found one yet in this country. When farm animals are taken to slaughter for food, the cuts that will be sold to butchers and grocery are first removed by pretty skilled workers with great knife skills. Whatever meat is left is mechanically separated from the bones for cold cuts and processed meat products (those yummy chicken nuggets anyone ?? ) What is then left is "condemned for human consumption and thrown onto a "hopper" to grind together for meat meal. It is mixed with water and other stuff to make into a dough or paste. That paste is then heat pressed and cooked at high temperature with its added synthetic ( or natural) vitamins and flavors. Then pressed through and extruder and sprayed with some appetizing flavoring, packaged and sent to the warehouse to sit for who knows how long before you get it. It does not matter what price, company, brand or manufacturer food you purchase. If it comes in little brown pellets that is how it is made. The two governing agencies that oversee animal feed in America are the FDA ( Food and Drug Administration) and AACFO (Association of American Feed Control Officials) I have linked their document here. https://www.aafco.org/consumers/understanding-pet-food/natural/
As you may read, their bar is VERY low.
I prefer to follow the NRC (National Research Council) regulations
